Nagaoka Fireworks 2027:
dates, tickets, and how to actually get a seat.
The Nagaoka Matsuri Grand Fireworks Festival is held every year on August 2 and 3. It is one of Japan’s three great fireworks festivals — about a million people come to watch, and roughly 20,000 shells are fired across the two evenings. Getting a seat has become genuinely difficult, and hardest of all if you live outside Japan.
This page explains, honestly, how tickets work, what your realistic options are, and what is and isn’t decided yet for our own private rooftop seats near the launch site.

August 2 and 3, 2027 are both weekdays
The festival dates never move: August 1 is a memorial ceremony, and the fireworks are always on August 2 and 3. In 2027 those fall on a Monday and Tuesday. Treat these two evenings as fixed when you plan your trip — and book your accommodation and seats early.

How official tickets work (and why they are hard to get)
The system changed recently, and a lot of older advice online is now wrong.
- Lottery only. Since 2026, every official paid seat is allocated by lottery. First-come, first-served online sales were abolished.
- It sells out in the first round. In 2026 the first lottery round filled the allocation, and the planned second round was cancelled.
- Official resale does not work from abroad. The resale service requires a Japanese address and phone number.
- There are no free viewing areas. They were abolished in 2023.
Your realistic options
1. A tour package with reserved seats
Japanese travel agencies hold seat allocations and resell them inside bus or accommodation packages. These also appear on platforms such as KKday and Klook. Prices vary with the seat class and what the package includes, and they tend to sell out months ahead. This is the most reliable route if you want an official seat.
2. A hotel room with a river view
A small number of rooms overlook the launch area. They are typically booked close to a year in advance and priced accordingly.
3. A privately operated viewing space
Rooftops, terraces and private properties near the river, run independently of the festival. Availability and quality vary widely — and, importantly, so do the sightlines. This is the category our own rooftop belongs to.

What our rooftop is
A building rooftop in Yamada 1-chome, by Chosei Bridge on the Nagaoka Station side of the river, within walking distance of the launch area. All seats are reserved, there is a toilet inside the building, and you do not need to stake out a spot hours in advance.
2026 was our first year, run as an invitation-only trial with 22 guests — no tickets were sold. Satisfaction was 4.6 out of 5 (n=10), and what guests mentioned most was not the fireworks: it was the absence of crowds.
What we’d rather tell you up front
These points were raised by the 10 guests who answered our 2026 survey. They still apply in 2027.
- From some seats, part of the right-hand side is hidden. A penthouse structure stands on the right of the roof, so the right edge of the display is cut off from the right-hand seats. (No venue sees the whole 2 km display in any case.) Three guests raised this independently in 2026. For 2027 we are measuring the view from every seat and will publish it as a seat map.
- There is no lift to the roof. Access is by stairs only — please keep this in mind if you are elderly or bringing small children.
- The toilet was under renovation in 2026. Guests were split between “glad it was so close” and “the renovation bothered me”. It is being renovated ahead of 2027.

Sales schedule
- AUTUMN–WINTER 2026Preparation. Toilet renovation, seat-by-seat sightline measurement and the virtual tour. Nothing is on sale during this period.
- LATE APRIL 2027Sales open (planned). People on the early-notice list hear first, before the public announcement.
- AUG 2 (MON) & 3 (TUE), 2027Festival. Doors planned for 17:00.
